Enneagram Type 9 (The Peacemaker) Fitness Personality
Enneagram Type 9 individuals—aka "The Peacemaker" or "The Mediator" —often struggle with exercise due to their easygoing, adaptable, and conflict-avoidant personality.
Enneagram Type 9 Exercise Struggles
Here are some common challenges and potential struggles an Enneagram Type 9 may face when it comes to exercise:
Tendency to Procrastinate: Type 9s often avoid starting or committing to exercise routines. You may also prioritize other people's needs or avoid confrontation, causing you to put off exercising to keep peace and harmony.
Lack of Initiative: Type 9s struggle to take action when starting a new exercise program. You may need external motivation or support to get started.
Resistance to Structure: Type 9s prefer flexibility and resist rigid exercise schedules. As a result, you may struggle to stick with a consistent exercise routine.
Avoiding Conflict or Stress: Type 9s may avoid exercise if it seems too stressful or overly demanding. Instead, you may choose more relaxed activities.
Lack of Assertiveness: Type 9s can have trouble voicing their preferences and needs in group settings. You may go along with someone else's exercise plans, even if it's not something you enjoy.
Difficulty Saying No: Type 9s have trouble saying no to social events or commitments. This can make it difficult for you to prioritize exercise.
Neglecting Self-Care: Type 9s often put the needs of others before their own self-care, causing them to neglect their fitness.
Daydreaming or Getting Lost in Thought: While exercising, Type 9s may drift off into their thoughts. This can cause reduced intensity and engagement during a workout.
Lack of Competitive Drive: Type 9s usually aren't highly competitive. Trying to outperform others during exercises or challenges doesn't motivate you.
How to Improve Your Relationship with Exercise
To overcome these challenges, here are some strategies that may help Type 9s create a more positive exercise experience:
Create a Supportive Environment: Find a non-judgmental and supportive exercise environment. The right gym, or program can help you feel comfortable and safe to explore exercises. Expecting and Empowered is a community of all moms and moms to be who are striving towards the same goal of taking care of themselves during a very full season.
Start with Gentle Activities: Try calming and peaceful exercises like yoga, either prenatal or postpartum, or taking walks outside. You can also try self-guided strength training programs that allow you to take your time and move at a pace that feels good to your body.
Find Exercise Partners: Exercise with a supportive friend or partner to make working out more enjoyable and social. They can also act as an accountability partner that helps you avoid procrastinating and avoidance. This is EXACTLY why we have created accountability challenges where we help you find an encouraging small group to keep each other motivated and on track.
Choose Flexible Routines: Following a flexible exercise program (like the Expecting + Empowered App) lets you adapt your workout routine to changing schedules and social commitments. As a busy mom, flexibility is essential for consistency.
Set Achievable Goals: Work on creating realistic and achievable exercise goals that are not overly demanding. Stepping stone goals can help you avoid being overwhelmed.
Try Mindful Movement: To help keep your mind from wandering during exercise, practice mindfulness techniques like breathing. Mindful movement can help you stay present and engaged during your workout. We’ve built in intentional breathing into our postpartum and prenatal programs exactly for this reason.
Prioritize Your Physical Self-Care: Remember to recognize your worth and needs! Exercising can improve your health, reduce stress, and improve mood so you're your best self.
Type 9s can develop a more positive and fulfilling relationship with exercise with supportive exercise partners, flexible programs, and gentle activities that align with their easy going nature. Remember, everyone is unique! These suggestions may not apply to every Enneagram Type 9. It's important to listen to your own needs, preferences, and limitations when it comes to exercise.
When you join the Expecting and Empowered App, you gain a supportive community of women with the same goals as you. Motherhood is HARD, and taking time for yourself can feel overwhelming. With easy-to-follow workouts—whether you’re in the mood for a guided strength training program or a more intuitive yoga flow—everything you need is in one spot.
With built-in community-based challenges, you’ll connect with other moms, stay motivated, and reach attainable goals. Everything you need is waiting for you inside the app!
